- ItemPerformance evaluation of ubiquitous inference services: reasoning-related issues.(2006-04) Bulcão Neto, Renato de Freitas; Pimentel, Maria da Graça CamposConsidering the current demand for efforts that deal with performance evaluation of ubiquitous computing services, this paperfocuses on evaluating a context inference service that can be configured according to applications reasoning requirements. After detailing a performance evaluation of a context inference service with multiple inference engines over semantic context information, we contribute with a set of general reasoning-related issues that developers must take into account when building ontology-based ubiquitous applications.
- ItemPOCAp: a Software Process for Ontology-Based Context-Aware Applications.(2006-04) Bulcão Neto, Renato de Freitas; Kudo, Taciana Novo; Pimentel, Maria da Graça CamposWhile research in context-aware computing has produced useful results in the form of devices, software infrastructures and applications, there has been a lack of research investigating software engineering issues for context-aware computing. This paper presents the POCAp process, a novel process for the development of context-aware applications that make use ofontological context information. POCAp addresses the need for software engineering solutions regarding the development ofontology-based context-aware applications.
- ItemProvision of contex information to CSCW applications: a web service approach.(2004-03) Bulcão Neto, Renato de Freitas; Jardim, Carlos Odenique; Camacho-Guerrero, José Antonio; Cattelan, Renan Gonçalves; Pimentel, Maria da Graça CamposTo tackle the demand for support to building CSCW applications, one approach has been the provision of reusable components and infrastructures that deal with factors such as synchronization, communication and access control. In particular; regarding the CSCW applications necessity ofusing context information to adapt their services following users and groups needs, the literature has reported the provision of models and associated implementations that allow applications to specify, share and report relevant context information. We propose that context-aware CSCW applications can take advantage of the benefits provided by Web Services, alleviating differences in heterogeneous environments and allowing the interchange ofinformation between applications and infrastructures. We present the Context Kernel Web Service, which models classic dimensions for context information. We also show how typical operations demanded by CSCW applications can use the Context Kernel Web Service to store, retrieve and exchange context information via the Web.
- ItemA Web service integrating ubiquitous computing applications.(2003-08) Arruda Jr., Carlos Roberto E. de; Bulcão Neto, Renato de Freitas; Pimentel, Maria da Graça CamposUbiquitous computing applications exploit context information to adapt their services in accordance with users needs based on information sensed both from the physical and computational environment. We advocate that context -aware applications can take advantage of the benefits provided by Web Services in particular, alleviating diferences in heterogeneous ubiquitous environments and apportioning responsibilities between applications and infrastructures. We present the Context Kernel Web Service that illustrates how such a service could be built at the same time that leverages dimensions for context information proposed in the literature. The Context Kernel as a Web Service allows applications not only to store and retrieve, but also to exchange context information through the Web.
